The acclaimed crime series AC-12 will make a comeback for its 7th season, announced by the BBC.

A brand new six-episode series written by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Belfast this spring, as confirmed by the production team.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the return, saying she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar added, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together soon."

The last season wrapped up in recent years with a finale that drew in more than 17 million audience members. Speculation about a potential return have been circulating ever since, but official word only arrived recently.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

Series seven will open with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and renamed as the new police oversight body, as revealed by production details.

Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings remain tasked to tackle misconduct within the law enforcement.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, the trio will take on their "most delicate case to date."

New Character and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer celebrated for takedowns of organized crime, faces allegations of abusing his position to become a offender.

However, his case could be a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still active in the shadows, plot details suggested.

In a statement, Jed Mercurio said: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had so many followers track the ups and downs of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a new season."

He added: "Corruption in this country is supposed to have ended while the series was not airing, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Actor Responses

The Scottish actor called appearing in the police drama as "the role of a career".

"Not only the show's success but the colleagues I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "Obviously I'm so excited Line of Duty is back! Eager to work with Jed, Martin and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor commented: "While anticipating the AC-12 days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be working together next year."

"Delighted with the announcement and anticipating those unexpected twists and turns."

Series Legacy

The drama launched in 2012 and became one of the most popular TV dramas of the last decade, attracting notable actors such as Thandiwe Newton.

Broadcasters haven't revealed exactly the upcoming series will hit screens.

The finale of series six brought the extended plot about the search for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a close, and producers indicated at the moment there were no intentions for further series.

Nevertheless, the corporation confirmed on Tuesday that a new season is now being produced.
