The English golfer Wins the Abu Dhabi Title in Dramatic Playoff Battle Against Tommy Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer displayed remarkable nerve to claim the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday, defeating his compatriot in a tense playoff following a topsy-turvy last day of competition.
Rai sank a decisive birdie from just over eight foot to seal the victory, repeating his only previous Rolex Series success at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was likewise a play-off win over the same opponent.
Final Round Drama
Rai started the last day with a one-shot advantage over fellow Englishman Fleetwood and Denmark’s Nicolai Højgaard. He ended up with a total score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, 67 final round that included seven birdie putts and two bogeys.
The challenger edged one shot ahead with two holes to play after a birdie putt on the sixteenth, but his rival tied it up again on the 17th and then missed a ten-foot birdie putt to win outright on the final hole.
Play-Off Decider
That set up a playoff at Yas Links where Rai triumphed to claim the title and $1.5 million (ÂŁ1.13 million) in winnings.

Notable Contenders
The Northern Irish star left himself a bit too far to do, coming up one shot behind in a tie for third with Højgaard, after a spectacular 62 closing round of ten-under. It was his best-ever round on the European Tour, including eight birdie putts and an eagle.
Højgaard carded six birdies of his own, but his chances of leading the standings were hit by a dropped shot on the 12th. English golfer Mansell produced an excellent final-round seven-under to finish in a tie for fifth place with Australian Hillier.
