The East African nation Welcomes Valuable Treasures Following a Century Stay in a German Family
A total of 12 historical objects were officially given back to Ethiopia after remaining by a German family for over a century.
The treasures, initially gathered in the 1920s by the German then-envoy to the Ethiopian empire a German envoy and his wife Hedwig, were transferred on midweek to the Ethiopian Studies Institute at the university in Addis Ababa.
This set featured crowns, armor and paintings, each viewed as culturally important in the nation.
"The artefacts continue to represent a emblem of the lasting and friendly connection between the German nation and Ethiopia," stated Germany's envoy, the envoy to Ethiopia.
Dr. a professor, whose father was born during the household's service in the nation, delivered the items at a event joined by Tourism Minister Selamawit Kassa.
He said that the family's aim to restore the items was to "share their appeal with the public and maintain the heritage and past linked to my parent's origin."
The objects were either donations or acquisitions, according to the household.
"I would like to express gratitude to Professor Weiss's family for practically expressing their profound love for the nation by meticulously safeguarding these items and crucially securing their repatriation to their rightful nation," commented the official.
The minister added that the pieces would soon be available to the people for investigation and scholarly work, describing the action a landmark in preserving the nation's historical legacy.
"Initiatives are ongoing to bring back historical items that are held in the hands of private persons and institutions around the planet," she affirmed.
During imperial control in Africa, numerous of traditional items were plundered.
The demand by nations in Africa for the repatriation of looted artefacts has been met with some success in recent years - though some objects are merely on short-term display.
In the year 2022, the German government was the pioneering nation to repatriate a portion of the famous Benin artifacts to the West African nation as part of an effort to address its "dark past."
