Chicago's MLB Team Secure Star Hitter Munetaka Murakami on an Substantial Two-Year Contract.
In a major move for their overhauling roster, the South Side team have signed Japanese star Munetaka Murakami, agreeing to a lucrative contract for the high-profile player.
Financial Terms and Added Benefits
The agreement includes a substantial signing bonus, payable within 30 days, in addition to compensation of sixteen million for the 2026 season and $17 million for the 2027 year.
Additionally, Murakami's compensation can increase based on accolade achievements in 2026:
- An additional $1M for being named the league MVP award.
- $500,000 for finishing second or third in MVP voting.
- $250,000 for ranking fourth through 10th.
- $250,000 for earning the Rookie of the Year honor.
The agreement includes that he cannot be assigned to the minors without his approval and allows him to become a unrestricted player at the termination of the contract. Further benefits include a team-provided interpreter and airfare between the U.S. and Japan.
Transfer Payment and Franchise History
As part of the acquisition, Chicago is obligated to provide a transfer fee of over $6.5 million to the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's Central League. The Swallows are also entitled to a 15% cut of any triggered salary escalators.
Murakami will become the fourth-ever Japanese to represent the South Siders, joining reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu was a manager for Murakami back in Japan.
On-Field Accomplishments
Murakami, a left-side batter who turns 26 in February, joins a emerging group of offensive players in Chicago that also features prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The team are finished with a last-place season, finishing at the bottom in the AL Central but showing a notable improvement from the previous campaign.
The winner of back-to-back league MVP honors in 2021 and 2022, Murakami is famous for a monumental 2022 season where he hit 56 HRs, breaking the single-season record for a Japanese-born player previously held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That feat also made him the most youthful hitter ever to secure Japan's coveted Triple Crown.
His last year was curtailed to just 56 appearances due to an oblique injury. Even with striking out 64 Ks, he still managed .273 with 22 home runs and 47 runs batted in.
Over his eight-year tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has posted a .270 batting average with 246 home runs, 647 RBI, and 977 Ks in 892 contests. Early in his career playing primarily at first base, he has since transitioned to third.
WBC Heroics
Murakami's big-game performance were on center stage during the last World Baseball Classic. In the semi-final against Mexico, he drove in a victory-sealing two-base hit that brought home teammates for a come-from-behind one-run win. The next night in the title match against the Team USA, he slugged a game-tying homer in the early innings, paving the way for Japan's eventual title triumph.
The lefty slugger is scheduled to be unveiled at a introductory event on Monday.
