Intense heatwave warnings have additionally been issued for the coming days in parts of SA and NSW, as a system of atmospheric pressure moves to the east, delivering intense sunshine to much of the region.
The mix of extremely dry vegetation and relentless heat creates a volatile scenario for emergency crews.

Elsewhere, a metropolis was left in darkness last week after powerful winds damaged the urban electrical network, with falling trees bringing down electricity cables. The weather conditions also caused significant travel disruption at a key airport, where hundreds of air services were cancelled. Substantial impact on power systems is anticipated to create further issues as service providers scramble to restore power to over 1 million residents.

Meanwhile, a valley known for its clear skies and plentiful sunlight has endured one of its dullest and foggiest weeks on recorded history. A specific type of low cloud, which usually lingers for only a short time, has been unusually widespread and long-lasting this year, keeping the mercury at a major airport below 8C for more than a week – the longest such streak in over three decades. The prolonged haze has been driven by exceptional fall precipitation that left soils saturated.
