Adult Swim's Top New Show of This Year Secures a Significant Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
Last October, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the network unveiled a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. At a time often characterized by cynicism, this show's earnestness struck a chord and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Major Commitment
On December 18th, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and shared it with others," said Cappa. "Iām incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."
A President's Endorsement
In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who found the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming style.
"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. Thereās something deeply soothing about watching this lovable family navigate their simple existence.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its current sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.
āThere's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,ā noted Cappa. āIt feels as if we have to know weāre the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.ā
The Path Forward
Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially help usher in that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to enjoy the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
