During the year 2006, I traveled to Canberra for an admissions interview for medical school. I assumed to book lodging after getting there, however upon reaching the city, a big convention was in town and every single youth hostels and affordable lodging were fully booked.

As a visitor from the city-state of Singapore, I thought the possibility of just sleep at the airport – but soon learned Canberra airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, closes around the clock. With no idea quite what to do and growing worried, I hopped on a city-bound bus and started wandering towards a gaming venue, thinking I might spend the evening in a place operating through the night. This was not ideal in the ideal condition for nailing an interview the next morning, however, being a broke student, I couldn’t afford.

Our society requires more people like that woman.

I must have looked confused as a young woman spotted me walking aimlessly through downtown and inquired whether I needed help. I recounted my predicament and without hesitation she offered I could sleep on the floor of her dormitory at the local university – a perfect solution, as that’s where the important interview was the following day. She went further by offering me some free dinner: one of the sandwiches she had from her evening job. I was able to use warm shower facilities and somewhere safe and secure for the evening.

With hindsight, I now understand what a big chance she took as a young woman allowing a guy she’d just met crash at her place. At that time I was in my male privilege bubble and was oblivious to the potential danger. Today, as a parent, it astounds me she took that chance – and remain deeply appreciative.

I never did study at the Australian National University, and I lost touch with that kind stranger again, but I’ve never forgotten her selfless deed of kindness. My sincere desire is that the universe has repaid her generosity many times over. Our society requires more folks who show such kindness.
