A minimum of 64 Fatally Wounded in Rio's Biggest Law Enforcement Operation on Organized Crime
At least 64 people lost their lives in a security raid against the organized crime group in Rio de Janeiro's northern suburbs - the most extensive and fatal action in the region's records.
Four law enforcement personnel were included in the fatalities during Operation Containment in the neighborhoods of AlemĂŁo and Penha, government representatives reported. More than 80 individuals were detained.
Violent conflicts commenced when approximately 2,500 police forces entered the area on Tuesday early hours. The Comando Vermelho countered with armed resistance, setting fire to barriers and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, police representatives stated.
The United Nations human rights body expressed being "horrified" by the police operation, demanding "immediate and thorough inquiries".
Mission Consequences
The slum neighborhoods near Rio's airport is seen as the central command of a major criminal organizations.
Government representatives confirmed at least 50 of those killed were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".
Numerous individuals were injured, including non-combatants affected by the violence.
Resident Accounts
Community members have likened the mountainous region - home to about 300,000 residents - to a "combat area" since the mission commenced.
Access ways continue shut in the entire neighborhood.
Gang Growth
The Red Command group have been expanding their influence in the area, growing illegal substance trade paths and dominance over the slum communities.
Security forces said in excess of 200kg (441lb) of drugs were confiscated in the operation, in addition to multiple guns.
Raid Preparation
The combined action by different law enforcement agencies comes after a year-long investigation.
Many of the individuals are thought to be affiliates of a group from the Pará state who are currently hiding in the city.
